Pugmills

Pugmills for clay conditioning, reclaim and blending — Kiln Crafts is the UK Gladstone supplier, with de-airing, vertical and mixer models in stock for studios, schools and production potters. Free UK delivery on most pugmills.

De-airing vs non-de-airing — which do you need?

  • De-airing pugmills use a vacuum chamber to remove air pockets from the clay before extrusion. The result is throwing-ready clay straight off the mill — essential if you sell pots, run a wheel-throwing studio, or need consistent results from reclaimed clay. Range: G48 70mm, G76 75mm, G77 vertical 75mm, G54 100mm.
  • Non-de-airing pugmills condition and blend clay without vacuum. Excellent for hand-building, slab-roll prep and reclaim where air pockets are removed at wedging. More compact and lower-cost than de-airing equivalents. Range: G49E 50mm, G50E, G52 75mm, G53 vertical, G55 vertical.

Sizing your pugmill

Pugmill capacity is measured in kg of clay per hour. As a rough guide:

  • 50mm models (G49E, G50E): ~80–100 kg/hour — small studio, evening-class scale, single potter.
  • 75mm models (G52, G76, G77): ~150–200 kg/hour — busy studio, school department, light production.
  • 100mm + mixer (G54, G78): ~250 kg/hour and up — production studio, college, commercial reclaim.

Power and electrical considerations

Most Gladstone pugmills are 240V single-phase and run from a standard 13A or 16A UK socket. Larger de-airing and mixer models may require three-phase or a 32A supply — check the product spec or ask us if you''re not sure. Compact pugmills suit a domestic studio; larger units typically need a dedicated workshop or production area.

Pugmills, clay reclaim and the wider studio

A pugmill pairs naturally with clay extruders for shaped clay output, and with pottery wheels for throwing-ready stock. If you''re setting up a studio for the first time, our guide to pugmills walks through the buying decisions in more detail.
