View full detailsClay extruders for UK pottery studios — wall-mount Gladstone extruders for consistent coils, handles, hollow forms and shaped sections. Whether you''re producing matched mug handles by the dozen or extruding hollow forms for sculpture, the right extruder turns a slow hand-rolling job into a few seconds at the lever.
When you need an extruder:
Wall-mounted vs benchtop: almost all production pottery extruders are wall-mounted — they need leverage, and a stud wall or solid masonry mount is the cleanest way to get it. Bench-top hand-held extruders exist for small studios and PMC work but are limited in clay volume. We stock the Gladstone G64 as our standard wall-mount extruder; it accepts both round and square dies and is sized for typical UK studios.
Dies — the part that does the work: the die is the metal plate at the bottom of the barrel that shapes the extruded clay. A round die makes coils; a square die makes square section; a hollow die makes tube. Most studios start with a small set of round and hollow dies and add as projects demand. The G64 with Set of Dies bundles the extruder with a starter set so you can be productive on day one.
Tile and architectural extrusion: if you''re making tiles, fireplace surrounds or large architectural sections, a standard wall-mount extruder won''t be big enough. The Gladstone G70 Tile Extruder is purpose-built for that work — significantly larger barrel, heavier construction and capable of consistent tile output. It''s a serious studio investment, not a hobbyist tool.
Extruder vs pugmill — easy mistake: an extruder shapes clay into a profile via a die; a pugmill mixes and de-airs clay (and, on some models, extrudes a barrel of pugged clay). They do different jobs. Many production studios run both. If you need consistent recycled clay through your extruder, see our pottery pugmills range; if you''ve come from "what is a pugmill" looking for the difference — extruder for shape, pugmill for prep.
UK delivery + support: Gladstone extruders ship from UK stock. We''re potters ourselves — if you''re not sure whether the G64 or G70 is right for your studio, or which dies to start with, give us a call on 01206 648025 or drop a line. We''d rather you bought once, correctly, than upgraded twice.
