Leicester's clay venues sit in three quite different places: a makers' yard near Rutland Street in the city centre, a weekly class in Clarendon Park, and a painting studio out at Oadby on the south-eastern edge. That mix helps. You can start with a one-off session, move on to a regular evening class, and later look at open-access membership if you want to work at your own pace. We've checked each venue's own website this month and only listed places that teach or host clay work for the public.

The Clay Room

An open-access ceramics space where members use communal equipment and get technical support. It also runs taster sessions, evening classes and clay days for beginners and improvers. Membership is aimed at people with some experience, so start with a class if you're brand new.

Eskimo Blue

Weekly pottery classes run in terms, plus private sessions for coil building, figure making and a one-to-one wheel session. The one-to-one option is useful if group classes aren't your thing.

Lollipops Pottery Painting Studio

Mostly a pottery painting venue, with adults' evenings, calm painting sessions, private hire and a separate clay classes strand. It's the most casual option here and suits a group outing better than a skills course.

Clay Works Leicester

Pottery with Rachel Barnett, who has taught ceramics in Leicester for over 30 years, much of it with the adult learning service. Six-week courses run mornings, afternoons and evenings, with Saturday socials, one-day workshops and sip-and-pot parties alongside, so there's a way in whether you want a proper term of teaching or a single afternoon with friends. The space is a light ground-floor room in a converted old school with two Shimpo wheels, two kilns and over a hundred glazes, five minutes from the M1 with free parking.

Prefer to throw at home?

If you've done a few sessions at the Clay Room or Eskimo Blue and caught the habit, a wheel at home removes the booking and the commute. It isn't a replacement for a teacher, and it takes a few weeks to stop fighting the clay, but many people find a small wheel and a spare corner is enough. Our guide compares the costs honestly.
