Buying a kiln for your school? Talk to an expert before you commit.
A kiln is a significant capital purchase for any art department — and getting the spec wrong creates real problems. Wrong capacity, wrong power requirements, wrong temperature range. Our team offers free specification consultations so you can get it right first time and justify the purchase to everyone who needs to sign it off.
15 minutes. No obligation. A clear recommendation you can take into sign-off.
The risks of getting it wrong
The wrong kiln causes problems your department will feel for years
Most art departments research online, pick something that looks right on paper, and only find out about the problems after the order is placed. At this price point — with school budgets under scrutiny — that's not a mistake you want to make.
- 📐 Wrong chamber capacity creates firing bottlenecks for your classes or means running inefficient firings that cost more in electricity
- ⚡ Power supply issues can derail installation entirely — three-phase requirements, load calculations, ventilation all need checking before you order
- 🌡 Wrong temperature range means it won't fire the clay bodies or glazes your curriculum requires
- 📝 A wrong decision is very hard to justify to a head teacher or budget committee — especially when sign-off involves people who don't understand the technical requirements
"We've helped art departments across the UK get their kiln spec right. The schools that call us first always come away with a better purchase — and an easier sign-off process."— The Kiln Crafts Team
That's why we offer free specification consultations for schools and colleges. Not a sales call — a technical conversation to make sure you're specifying the right kiln for your art department.

Everything that matters before you commit
Capacity planning for your classes
We'll work out the right chamber size based on your class sizes, how often your department fires, and the scale of work your students produce.
Power supply and installation requirements
Single phase, three phase, load calculations, ventilation — we'll go through your school's setup so there are no surprises on installation day.
Temperature range and curriculum fit
We'll make sure the kiln matches the clay bodies, glazes, and firing schedules your curriculum requires — now and as your programme develops.

Before you book
Is the consultation really free?
Yes, completely. There's no obligation to purchase from us. We offer the consultation because the right specification saves everyone time — including us.
How long does it take?
Around 20 minutes for a straightforward school setup. If you're specifying multiple kilns or a more complex installation, it may run a little longer — we'll take whatever time is needed.
What information do I need beforehand?
Ideally: an idea of your class sizes, how often the kiln will be used, available space in your art department, power supply type if known, and approximate budget. If you have room dimensions or site photos, send them to support@kilncrafts.co.uk before the call.
Can you provide a written specification for sign-off?
Yes. If you need a written specification for internal procurement or budget committee sign-off, we can provide that following the call. Just let us know when you book.
Do you work with education procurement requirements?
Yes — we work with schools and colleges regularly and understand education procurement, including purchase orders and budget cycles. Discuss this during your consultation and we'll advise on the best approach for your school.
What if the budget isn't confirmed yet?
That's absolutely fine. Many schools book a consultation during the planning stage, months before budget is confirmed. We'd rather you have the right information early than rush a decision under time pressure.
Ready to get the spec right?
20 minutes now saves your department a very expensive problem later.
