Pottery Studios in Tyne and Wear

Tyne and Wear's clay scene is spread along the Metro line rather than packed into one postcode. There's a painting and making space in Jesmond, wheel workshops in a Newcastle community centre, and a working pottery south of the river in Jarrow with its own kilns and seven wheels. Which one suits you depends on whether you want a one-off evening or somewhere to keep coming back to. We've checked each venue's own website this month, and we've only listed places we could confirm are open to the public and teach clay, not just sell it.

The Pottery Experience

A painting and making café in Jesmond that also runs taster throwing, hand-building and courses. It opened in April 2019 and is the easiest first step if you'd like to try a wheel without committing to a term. The site lists a 13-minute walk from Jesmond Metro.

Soul Ceramiks

Run from the John Marley Centre, with bookable wheel-throwing sessions for two, seasonal hand-building workshops and kiln hire for people who already make at home. Check the workshop calendar first, as sessions are dated rather than drop-in.

Muddy Fingers Pottery

A properly equipped working pottery south of the Tyne with seven wheels, two handbuilding tables, a 115-litre kiln and a 680-litre kiln. Marv and Diane have taught ceramics for over 40 years between them, and they hire out kiln space. There's free parking and it's about ten minutes on foot from Jarrow Metro. They say the studio isn't fully accessible, so get in touch first if that matters.

Prefer to throw at home?

A good teacher is hard to beat for your first few sessions, and any of the three above will get you started. But if you're driving to Jarrow every week for an hour at the wheel, a wheel of your own starts to make sense.
