Not sure which kiln is right for you?

PotterycraftsAurora 40 Top Loading Kiln

A compact, plug-in top-loading kiln with 40 litres of firing space and the quality Potterycrafts are known for. Runs from a standard 13A socket — an accessible home studio kiln built in Stoke-on-Trent for reliable, consistent firings.

  • 40-litre chamber: A generous beginner and hobbyist capacity — comfortably handles mugs, bowls, tiles, and small sculptural pieces.
  • 13A household plug: No electrician, no dedicated circuit. Plug in and fire from day one.
  • Type R thermocouple: Precision temperature measurement as standard — consistent glaze results from firing to firing.
  • Gas strut lid assistance: The lid opens and closes smoothly without strain — a practical detail that matters when you're loading regularly.
  • Made in Stoke-on-Trent: Built by Potterycrafts in Britain's ceramics heartland. Factory spare parts support.

More Room, Same Simplicity

The Aurora 40 gives you 10 more litres than the Mercury — enough additional room to notice when you're loading a full mix of mugs and smaller pieces, or when you want two levels of tiles in a single firing. It still runs from a standard 13A socket, so there's no installation complexity between you and your first firing.

Potterycrafts build the Aurora in Stoke-on-Trent to the same quality standard as their larger studio and professional kilns. The gas strut lid opens smoothly and stays open without assistance while you pack the chamber — a small practical detail that makes a real difference when you're loading carefully. The 108mm base insulation is particularly generous for a compact kiln, helping maintain even temperature at the chamber floor.

The CERA-10+ controller is optional — 32 programmable firing schedules, clear display, and WiFi connectivity available as an upgrade. If you're just getting started, the kiln can be ordered without the controller and upgraded later.

The Aurora 40 Is Right For You If

  • You want more space than the Mercury 30 without increasing installation requirements
  • You fire personal-scale work and want the reliability of a Potterycrafts kiln
  • A 13A plug-in kiln is the practical choice for your studio setup
  • You want a gas strut lid for comfortable loading
  • You're buying your first kiln and want UK-made quality at this size

What Makes the Aurora 40 Work

40 Litres on a 13A Socket

At 2.9kW, the Aurora 40 runs comfortably from a standard 13A household socket — the same socket as a domestic kettle or heater. No dedicated electrical supply, no professional installation required. For home studio potters, this is one of the most important practical considerations when choosing a kiln — and the Aurora handles it at 40 litres.

Gas Strut Lid

The gas strut lid is a detail that's easy to underestimate until you've loaded a kiln without one. It opens smoothly, holds its position while you work, and closes easily without slamming. When you're placing kiln furniture and carefully positioning pieces, having both hands free without worrying about the lid makes the whole process safer and more comfortable.

108mm Base Insulation

The Aurora 40's floor uses 108mm of Ultralite granular insulation — a notably generous specification for a compact home kiln. Better base insulation means less heat escaping through the floor, more even temperature at the bottom of the chamber, and lower electricity consumption per firing. It's the kind of engineering detail that affects firing quality in ways you don't see directly but notice in your results.

The Aurora 40 comes on 75mm castors (two lockable) — you can position it in your studio and lock it in place for firing, then move it when needed. CERA-10+ controller optional at point of order or as a later upgrade.
