Which Nabertherm kiln do I need?

It comes down to capacity and your electrics. The Top 45 (45 litres, 2.9 kW) is the largest Nabertherm that fires to stoneware from an ordinary 13 A plug, which is why it's our best-selling Nabertherm. Beyond that you need a dedicated 16 A circuit, and from 80 litres up, three-phase.

Do Nabertherm kilns need three-phase power?

Not all of them. The Top 16 R, Top 45 and Top 60/L run from a standard 13 A socket. The Top 60 needs a dedicated 16 A circuit, and the Top 100 can be supplied single-phase on a 30 A hardwired circuit. The Top 80, the Top 130 and larger, and every N-Series and NW kiln, need three-phase.

What is the difference between Nabertherm Top, N-Series and NW kilns?

Top kilns are top-loading and cover 16 to 220 litres — you load down into the chamber. N-Series kilns are front-loading with a door, from 100 to 2,200 litres, heated on five sides. NW kilns are drawer kilns: the whole hearth rolls out on rails so you load at waist height, 150 to 1,000 litres.

How hot do Nabertherm kilns fire?

Every Top model fires to 1,320 °C except the Top 60/L, which is rated to 1,200 °C — fine for earthenware and most glazes, but not for stoneware fired above that. The N-Series front loaders and the NW drawer kilns are rated to 1,300 °C. All of them cover the standard UK earthenware and stoneware ranges.

Which Nabertherm kiln is best for a home workshop?

The Top 45. At 45 litres it holds a useful amount of work, it fires to 1,320 °C so stoneware is on the table, and at 2.9 kW it runs from an ordinary 13 A plug — no electrician needed. It is the Nabertherm we sell most of to people firing at home.

Still working out what size you need? Try the kiln size calculator, work out what it will cost to fire with the firing cost calculator, or read our guide to buying a pottery kiln.

The drawer kiln that changes how you load

If you've ever had back pain from loading a large front-loading kiln, the NW series is the answer. The entire hearth slides out on rails — you load at waist height, push it back in, and fire. If you fire every day it is transformative.

Six sizes from 150L up to 1000L. All fire to 1,300°C, all use the AC590 touch controller, all are three-phase (the power requirements get significant at the larger end — an electrician will need to assess your supply).

Specified for commercial potteries, colleges and workshops where kilns are fired daily. Not a sensible choice for firing at home — but if you're firing every day and loading is costing you time and backache, this is the format to look at.

The six variants

  • NW150 — 150L, £11,479
  • NW200 — 200L, £12,718
  • NW300 — 300L, £17,190
  • NW440 — 440L, £18,933
  • NW660 — 660L, £24,687
  • NW1000 — 1000L, £31,896

Why production potteries choose NW

Drawer loading

The hearth rolls out on rails at a comfortable working height. No stooping, no reaching into a deep front-loading chamber. Faster and safer to load.

Scales to real production

Up to 1000L capacity with commercial-grade construction. The biggest Nabertherm electric kilns we stock.

AC590 touch controller

The same Wi-Fi-enabled touch controller as the smaller Nabertherm kilns. Programme management doesn't change as you scale up.

The production pottery kiln. Drawer loading, serious capacity, German engineering.
