Most home pottery wheels are designed down to a price — sheet-metal frames, brushed motors, plastic pedals. Fine for evening classes, less fine if you’re throwing seriously and the motor starts to surge or the head develops a wobble after a few hundred hours.
The Durston Elite E320 is built the way studio wheels were built before the price race to the bottom. The body is die cast aluminium — rigid, planted, doesn’t flex when you centre 5kg of clay. The motor is a three-phase brushless unit that delivers genuinely usable torque at very low speeds, where cheaper wheels stall, lurch or sit still and pretend.
The 12½″ head is removable by hand for cleaning, the bearings are waterproof, the slop tray drains properly, and the body has tapped mounting points throughout for shelves, seats and accessories. It’s a system — not just a wheel.
Real torque at low speed is what separates a serious wheel from a hobby wheel. The brushless three-phase motor pulls cleanly from a crawl through to 280 rpm with no lurching, no audible surging, and no stall when you press into 5kg of clay during centring.
The whole machine is built around die cast aluminium components — the body, the wheel head, the foot pedal. Rigid, dimensionally stable, and unaffected by the wet environment that destroys painted-steel home wheels in two or three years.
Tapped mounting points throughout the body for the moveable shelf, the cast adjustable stool, the fixed pottery seat, and other accessories. The Elite E320 isn’t a standalone wheel — it’s the centre of a studio rig you build out as you grow.
