View full detailsA new electric pottery kiln for home firing starts at around £2,400 and most home-sized kilns land between £2,400 and £4,200. Larger front-loading kilns for schools and workshops run from roughly £4,000 to £8,000. On this page prices run from £2,405 to £39,138.
Buying a kiln is the point where pottery stops being a hobby you do somewhere else. It's also the purchase people find most frightening, and usually for the wrong reasons. Here's what genuinely changes the decision, and what doesn't.
Six ranges from three makers. Prices are what you'd pay today; capacities are the sizes we can order.
| Range | Capacity | Price | Models | The catch | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Potterycrafts — top-loading | 30–225 L | £2,659 – £6,559 | 7 | British-built, the cheapest way in at 30 litres, and the sizes step up sensibly as you grow. No furniture set included. | Best first kiln |
| Nabertherm Top / HO — top-loading | 16–220 L | £2,405 – £5,830 | 13 | German-built with the AC590 controller, and the range starts smaller (16 litres) than anyone else here. Priciest at the small end for what you get. | Best control |
| Kilncare Ikon — top-loading | 46–100 L | £3,299 – £5,279 | 8 | Hand-built in Stoke-on-Trent, several models ship with a free furniture set, and the V61 is our most-asked-about kiln. 8–12 week lead time. | Best value at 46–100L |
| Kilncare Artizan — top-loading | 90–200 L | £7,399 – £8,179 | 3 | Built for daily firing in a school or a working workshop, not for occasional home use. You pay roughly double an Ikon of similar size. | Best heavy-duty |
| Potterycrafts — front-loading | 68–250 L | £4,029 – £7,869 | 7 | Front-loading from 68 litres up, so you stop lifting work over a rim. Costs more than a top-loader of the same capacity. | Best back-saver |
| Nabertherm N / NW — front-loading | chamber sizes vary | £4,123 – £39,138 | 13 | Chamber kilns for production and industry, up to figures no home supply will take. Well beyond home budgets at the top end. | Best at scale |
Almost every kiln on this page is built to order, not sat in a warehouse. Kilncare hand-build theirs in Stoke-on-Trent and lead times are typically 8–12 weeks from order. Nabertherm and Potterycrafts vary with their own build queues. We'd rather tell you that now than after you've paid — so ask us for the current lead time on the model you're looking at and we'll give you the real number, not a comfortable one. Right now there's exactly one kiln here in stock and ready to ship: an Ikon V61 GXR with furniture.
Delivery is free to UK mainland addresses. A kiln is a two-person, kerbside-weight item, so tell us if there are steps, a narrow gate or a first-floor room involved and we'll plan for it rather than turning up and improvising.
Start with where it's going to live and what your supply can take, then work backwards to a size. If it's a garage or a spare room on a normal socket, look at the 13-amp kilns. If you've got a dedicated circuit or you're willing to have one fitted, the 40–60 litre top-loaders are the sweet spot — big enough to be worth firing, small enough not to punish you on electricity.
Two guides do the long-form thinking behind this page: how to buy a pottery kiln in the UK, which walks the whole decision from supply to installation, and how much a pottery kiln costs, which includes a calculator that works out your cost per firing from your own tariff. If you want a shortlist rather than a range, phone us on 01202 144142 — that's genuinely faster.
A new electric pottery kiln for home firing starts at around £2,400 and most home-sized kilns land between £2,400 and £4,200. Larger front-loading kilns for schools and workshops run from roughly £4,000 to £8,000. On this page prices run from £2,405 to £39,138.
For firing your own work at home, 30–60 litres is the usual answer — it takes a decent load of mugs and bowls without costing a fortune to run. Go to 80–140 litres if you're firing for a class or selling regularly. Anything over 150 litres is workshop territory.
Some of them, yes. Kilns rated for a 13-amp supply plug into an ordinary socket, and we group those together on our 13amp pottery kilns page. Bigger kilns need a dedicated higher-current circuit fitted by an electrician, which is a real cost to budget for.
Top-loading is cheaper for the same capacity and lighter to install, so it's what most people firing at home end up with. Front-loading is easier on your back and easier to pack precisely, which matters if you're loading it several times a week. Neither fires better than the other.
Most kilns here are built to order rather than sitting on a shelf. Kilncare lead times are typically 8–12 weeks from order, hand-built in Stoke-on-Trent. We'll tell you the current queue before you commit. One Ikon V61 GXR is in stock now and ships straight away.
Most home kilns work out between £2.50 and £9 per firing, depending on the kiln's power rating, how long the schedule runs and what you pay per unit. Our kiln running cost calculator works it out from your own tariff.
Yes — shelves, props and batt wash aren't optional, they're how you stack a load. Some kilns here include a furniture set; others don't. Check the individual listing, and see our kiln furniture page if you need to add to it.
A garage is usually fine and is where a lot of home kilns live. You need a non-combustible floor, clearance around the kiln, ventilation and a supply that can take the load. A wooden shed is harder — it can be done, but get an electrician to look at it first.
Keep making.
